Program offerings:
It’s no surprise that middle school can be challenging. Our “Be Great by 8th” program is designed to offer holistic development which helps middle school students develop their skills to succeed in middle school, high school, and beyond.
Be Great by 8th Programs:
Torch Club
Torch Club provides a unique leadership program for youth ages 11-13. The members determine community needs and then implement programs to address those needs. As students learn leadership skills to prepare for tomorrow, they develop essential character traits: responsibility, respect for self and others, trustworthiness, fairness, and caring. Additionally, Torch Club sponsors the middle school dances as a service for middle schools in the area!
“The Outlet” Retail Group
“The Outlet” Retail group teaches middle school students how to run a small business through our in-house store called “The Outlet.” Members run the store while learning valuable skills such as customer service, inventory management, market research, pricing, salary-based earnings vs. commission-based earnings, store design and more! Members meet with local business owners in the community to learn how to increase the efficiency of the store and learn how to make a dream a reality.
Power Hour
Boys 2 Men and SMART Girls
Boys 2 Men and SMART Girls are gender specific groups that meet weekly to discuss the various changes that happen in middle school. Topics include conflict management, identity development, and how to navigate the physical, emotional, and social changes that happen through middle school and into high school. Explore personal identity, potential career options for the future, and how to bridge the two. These groups are open to any student who self identifies with the given gender.
D3: Duerksen Digital Design Center
In the D3 lab, students learn how to use the Adobe Creative Suite such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. Students have designed logos for “The Outlet” Retail Group and have had competed in design contests for the middle school teen program.
Project DJ
Students learn how to be a DJ and are the DJ’s for the middle school dances! Learn how to create playlists that will keep people dancing and also manage transitions. Opportunities exist for students to meet local DJs to learn about potential career options!
