In November 2015, the Club completed construction on a long-awaited dream—a cooking kitchen! Thanks to the Lynne Ruffin-Smith Foundation, our middle school youth baked pumpkin pies to break-in the new ovens and celebrate the opening.
Today we have expanded our culinary arts program into “Super Chefs”! Last year, 24 middle school youth completed Super Chef training from Julie Jacobs, a Nutrition Educator from the Linus Pauling Institute’s Healthy Youth Program. Teens participated in weekly classes focused on kitchen skills, meal planning, cooking and budgeting. Our members gained confidence in the kitchen and learned that cooking can be fun, uncomplicated and that zucchini prepared the right way is delicious! Our teens used their skills this summer, preparing morning snacks for our younger members. The teens tell us the best part of the program is getting to eat the food they prepare. Just to keep things exciting, the program culminated in an Iron Chef styled competition for the 24 graduates.
